    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To investigate possible differences in plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of selenium among elderly with and without a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

    Methods:

Cross-sectional study, performed with an elderly group with Alzheimer’s disease, diagnosed by a geriatric doctor, and compared to an elderly group without the disease, equaling gender, education, and age. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry determined plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of total selenium (Set).

    Results:

The mean age was 74.41±7.1 years in the Alzheimer’s disease group and 71.46±5.1 years among the control group. The Alzheimer’s disease group presented lower plasma concentrations (mean of 45.29±14.51 µg/dL vs. 55.14±14.01 µg/dL; p=0.004), and erythrocyte Set (median of 56.36 µg/L vs. 76.96 µg/L; p<0.001). The logistic regression model indicated an association between erythrocyte Set concentrations and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (p=0.028).

    Conclusion:

Elderly with Alzheimer’s disease present lower selenium concentrations in the evaluated organic compartments.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To describe the contribution of an awareness-raising workshop for nursing students on Alzheimer’s disease in the context of the elderly/family.

    Methods:

Strategic action-research developed with 15 university students from the sixth to the eighth semester of Nursing at a university institution in the Rio Grande do Sul. The data collected through semi-structured interviews, before and after an awareness-raising workshop on Alzheimer’s disease in elderly/family, were subjected to thematic content analysis.

    Results:

Six categories were identified that concern (Mis) perception of Alzheimer’s disease in the context of elderly/ family, from the characterization; risk factors; diagnosis; treatment of Alzheimer’s disease; from care to family members/caregivers; and care strategies for the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease.

    Conclusion:

The awareness-raising workshop enabled the students to broaden and deepen the knowledge on the theme of Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To describe the development of measures used between 1993 and 2016 to evaluate time use by family caregivers of elderly with dementia and to find out the patterns of time use identified in the literature.

    Method:

An integrative review of articles was performed, indexed by the following terms: time use management, family caregiver and elderly.

    Results:

A total of 17 articles were found, of which seven were methodological. Among these seven articles, five were psychometric. The most frequently used measures were self-reporting (matrices, questionnaires and inventories), validated through objective measures of occurrence and duration. Longitudinal, prospective, clinical and correlational studies showed that care time covaries with the receptors’ dependence and that the caregivers’ subjective well-being is more affected by the time restriction to free choice activities than the burden resulting from obligatory activities.

    Final considerations:

Valid self-reporting measures are widely used nowadays and they are considered to be effective to assess the objective and subjective costs of health care for dementia.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To describe the contributions of the Integrated Multidisciplinary Care Group for Caregivers of Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease as an educational and care (geron)technology in the context of Alzheimer's disease in elderly individuals from the perspective of family members/caregivers.

    Method:

Exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted with 13 family members/caregivers of elderly people participating in the support group of a university institution of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data collected between January and April 2016 through a semi-structured interview were submitted to discursive textual analysis.

    Results:

Family members/caregivers pointed out education and care as contributions of the group; education for care and for the future; exchange, socialization, and development of knowledge through the range of knowledge existing in the Group.

    Conclusion:

The Group contributes as a (geron)technology of care and education for care in which knowledge is built and applied in practice, supporting the experienced disorders and improving the quality of care provided for elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease.
