Objectives:
to describe researchers’ experience in collecting data from families of femicide victims.
Methods:
this descriptive, qualitative study took the form of an experience report and was conducted in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. It involved documentary consultation, training researchers, scheduling and conducting interviews, and using a field diary to record the researchers’ perceptions and experiences.
Results:
the descriptions and photographs of the crime scene were both distressing and impactful for the researchers. The mementos of the victims (including clothing, objects, and childhood photos) shown by their families were deeply moving. Identifying with these experiences facilitated listening to the stories told by the relatives. It was essential to maintain a non-judgmental attitude, acknowledge the loss, provide support for the suffering, and demonstrate a willingness to help.
Final Considerations:
the experience encompassed both theoretical and methodological aspects that were planned and executed in data collection, fostering the development of skills and sensitivity towards the cases. Beyond knowledge and preparation, researchers are expected to exhibit ethical conduct and empathetic capacity.

Objectives:
to describe the family’s experience in relation to daily life with a family member experiencing mental suffering.
Methods:
a qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological study grounded in Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of experience was conducted in ten households in a city in the state of Bahia, Brazil, where 24 participants of the Intersubjectivity Wheels reside. The descriptions produced were subjected to the Ambiguity Analytics technique.
Results:
the descriptions were categorized into: absence as a creative power of the sense of “being” and “not being a family”; and exclusion and acceptance as expressions of mental suffering in the family context.
Final Considerations:
the experience of mental suffering in the family’s daily life is marked by ambiguous feelings, such as joy and sadness, disappointment and satisfaction, lack of love and love. However, experiencing these feelings can mobilize the desire to “become” a family, increase the sense of autonomy and independence, and drive the formation of new family configurations.

Objectives:
to synthesize evidence from qualitative studies about the implications that the deprivation of liberty process has on incarcerated adults’ family relationships.
Methods:
a qualitative meta-synthesis, carried out in January 2021, by searching for publications indexed in six databases. The sample consisted of 10 studies, which were analyzed by MaxQDA®, and an interpretative synthesis was performed based on Attachment Theory.
Results:
based on first-order concepts, it was possible to synthesize second- and third-order concepts and present them in two interpretive context units: Strategies for strengthening family ties; Relationships that contribute to breaking down family ties. It was evidenced that visits, phone calls and letters favor the strengthening of secure attachment.
Final Considerations:
incarceration causes consequences in tie formation, reflecting on the attachment process between family members.

Objective:
To validate a questionnaire to assess the impact of dementia on one of the household members.
Methods:
Methodological study. The instrument was designed based on literature review, expert opinion, and researchers’ experience and then applied to a non-probability convenience sample consisting of 262 family members who live daily with a person with dementia. The construct validity was studied by exploratory factor analysis, principal components method, with varimax rotation of the items.
Results:
An instrument with 30 items was obtained, distributed in four dimensions: “Emotional dimension,” “Economic dimension,” “Family relations dimension,” and “Support-seeking dimension.” Factor analysis revealed a total explained variance of 54.96% and a total Cronbach’s alpha of .899.
Conclusions:
The instrument presents high internal consistency, grouped into four dimensions, all closely related to the family’s adaptation to the onset of dementia in one of its members.

Objective:
To analyze the correlation between family functionality and the quality of life of the elderly.
Method:
Sectional and correlational study conducted with 692 Brazilian elderly between July and October 2020. The elderly filled three instruments: biosociodemographic, family APGAR and WHOQOL-Old. The tests Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analyzed the data. The study considered a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) for all analyses.
Results:
The elderly with mild and severe family dysfunction presented worse quality of life when compared to the elderly with a functional family. All facets of quality of life correlated positively with family functionality.
Conclusion:
Family functionality is positively correlated with the quality of life of the elderly, therefore requiring the inclusion of the family in health care plans to identify potential family stressors early and plan interventions to solve the problems raised.

Objectives:
to analyze, in the light of systemic thinking, the association between family dynamics and the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by adolescents throughout life.
Methods:
a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in nine public schools in the city of Recife. Three hundred and sixty-four adolescents aged 14 to 19 years participated. We used three questionnaires: The Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test, a reduced version of the Drug Use Screening Inventory; and a sociodemographic questionnaire.
Results:
there was an association between parents/guardians ignoring what the child considers meaningful to him and the consumption of alcohol and tobacco by adolescents; we also verified an association between the occurrence of conflicting relationships and the consumption of illicit drugs by adolescents.
Conclusions:
it confirmed that disorganization in the family system, marked by impairments in emotional connections among members, and fragility in the sense of belonging are associated with the consumption of drugs in life by adolescents.
