Objective:
to understand the family’s experience of losing a family member by suicide.
Method:
study with qualitative approach with reference of the Constructivist Grounded Theory. The theoretical sample consisted of 20 participants, among health professionals and family members of people who committed suicide. Data were collected through intensive and coded interviews from initial and focused coding.
Results:
three categories were obtained: Being in a “state of shock”; Living with the suffering and effects of the loss of the family member; and, Rebuilding life. From the articulation of these categories emerged the phenomenon: “Experiencing the loss of a family member by suicide: from mourning to the quest for overcoming”.
Final considerations:
each category represents a stage in the family’s experience of losing a family member by suicide. The results provide support for suicide prevention and postvention actions developed by health professionals.

Objective:
The objective is to identify the variables that influence the impact of cancer on healthy siblings.
Method:
This is a quantitative, descriptive and correlational study with 83 families of children with cancer. We used the “Questionnaire to Assess the Impact of the Children's Cancer on the Family”, “Social Support Satisfaction Scale”, “Graffar Scale” and “Apgar Scale”.
Results:
The results show a relation between social support (X²=5.031, gl=1, p=0.025), expenses (t=-2.009, gl=81, p=0.048), disease impact on family structure (t=-3.210, gl=81, p=0.002) and the impact of the disease on healthy siblings.
Conclusion:
Social support plays an important role in these families, especially in the impact of the disease on healthy siblings. Nurses should identify the support systems that families have available, as well as their family functionality and the implications for healthy siblings.

Objective:
to understand, from grandmothers' perspectives, the experience of having a grandchild with cancer.
Method:
qualitative study, guided by philosophical hermeneutics. Eight grandmothers of children who had finished an oncology treatment participated in this study. Data were collected through interviews, which were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed according to the principles of hermeneutics.
Results:
the grandmothers underwent an experience of multiplied, silent, transformative, and permanent suffering. They believe it is their role to be present, but they recognize their adult children's independence and self-determination. Grandmothers highlighted that their experience has been very little accessed and considered by health care professionals.
Conclusion:
we recommend including grandparents in the context of care and in additional research.

Objective:
to identify the attributes of the "family insufficiency" concept of the aged in the literature.
Method:
critical literature analysis.
Results:
family insufficiency is characterized as a complex process of psychosocial interaction, founded mainly on low social support of the aged and impaired family ties. Its antecedents are found in contemporary transformations within the family system, intergenerational conflicts, impaired family relationships and social vulnerability of the family. The consequences of family insufficiency include social vulnerability of the aged, decline of psychological and functional health, lower quality of life and unsuccessful aging. An original theoretical proposal was elaborated for the concept of family insufficiency in the elderly, with the identification of its attributes, antecedents and consequences.
Conclusion:
the findings of this study constitute a theoretical advancement in the Family Insufficiency Syndrome in elderly people and provide data for future field research in developing the concept.
