Objectives:
to evaluate the effect of persuasive communication in the modulation of the behavioral intention of reducing the consumption of salt in heart failure patients.
Methods:
pilot quasi-experimental study with one group, before and after the application of audiovisual persuasive communication, as guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior. This study used a form built and validated to measure behavioral variables (Beliefs, Attitude, Subjective Norm, and Perceived Behavioral Control). Wilcoxon's test and Spearman's correlation were applied.
Results:
82 heart failure patients who were being monitored in outpatient clinics participated. The medians of the behavioral variables increased significantly after the exposition to persuasive communication, showing a high level of intention to execute the behavior.
Conclusions:
persuasive communication positively contributed to influence the behavioral intention of reducing the consumption of salt in people with cardiac insufficiency.

Objective:
to evaluate the effect of implementation of hospital discharge planning based on the taxonomies of NANDA-International, nursing interventions classification (NIC) and nursing outcomes classification (NOC) for patients with heart failure (HF) or diabetes mellitus (DM).
Methods:
quasi-experimental quantitative study conducted in a public university hospital located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Convenience sampling included 28 adult patients hospitalized for HF or DM with the nursing diagnosis Ineffective Health Management (00078), who received the following nursing interventions: Teaching: Disease Process, Teaching: Prescribed Medication and Teaching: Prescribed Diet. Before and after the intervention, the following nursing outcomes were evaluated : Knowledge: Diabetes Management and Knowledge: Heart Failure Management.
Results:
the score of the nursing outcome Knowledge: Heart Failure Management went from 2.05±0.28 to 2.54±0.30 (P=0.002), and of the nursing outcome Knowledge: Diabetes Management went from 2.61±0.55 to 3.21±0.57 (P=0.000).
Conclusion:
discharge planning based on the NIC improves the NOC score and may interfere in the health outcomes.

Objectives:
to evaluate the prevalence of symptoms in heart failure patients and to investigate the relationship between symptoms, functional capacity and performance.
Methods:
cross-sectional study, developed at a hospital specializing in cardiology. The sample (n=170) consisted of patients with heart failure, assessed by means of a sociodemographic form, New York Heart Association Functional Class, Edmonton Symptom Rating Scale and Karnofsky Physical Performance Scale. Analyzes were performed using Spearman’s Correlation and Pearson’s Chi-Square test.
Results:
dyspnea, fatigue and edema were the main symptoms that led to the search for health services. During hospitalization, the main symptoms were anxiety, sleep disturbance and sadness. Weak negative correlations were observed between functionality, functional class, and symptom overload.
Conclusions:
the prevalence of symptoms was high and changed throughout the hospitalization period. Patients with poorer functional capacity and poorer performance had greater symptom overload.

Objective:
To assess the quality of life related to health for heart failure patients and to relate sociodemographic and clinical data.
Method:
It is an observational and transversal study, with quantitative approach, carried out in a heart failure ambulatory in the state of Pernambuco.
Results:
In the sample (n=101), there was prevalence of men older than 60 years old, married and professionally inactive. The quality of life related to health, based on the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire, was considered moderate (34.3±21.6), being significantly related to age (p=0.004), functional class (p<0.001), and patients with chagasic cardiopathy (p=0.02).
Conclusion:
The quality of life in the HF group of chagasic etiology was more compromised, specially in the emotional dimension. It is suggested that studies on the hypothesis that longer ambulatory follow-up improves quality of life and that having Chagas disease interferes negatively with the quality of life of heart failure patients.

Objective:
To explore the meaning of being a family caregiver for a relative with advanced heart failure (HF) in their own home, and to gain an understanding of how dignity is upheld in family caregiving contexts.
Method:
We used a phenomenological-hermeneutical method inspired by the Ricoeurian philosophy. Portuguese caregivers for relatives with advanced HF participated in two reflective interviews over a four-month period.
Results:
The ten family caregivers enrolled in this study included two daughters and eight spouses with a mean age of 70 years. We identified two main themes: (1) Struggle between inner force and sense of duty; (2) Struggle between feelings of burden and security.
Final considerations:
People with HF have debilitating symptoms associated with psychological stress, which can burden both them and their family caregivers. Findings support that family caregivers require participation in the planning and execution of their relative's health care.

Objective:
To determine the influence of socio-demographic characteristics in the self-care of people with heart failure (HF).
Method:
Cross-sectional, analytical study, held in three private hospitals in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil, with 57 hospitalized patients. The data were collected through a demographic characterization form and a self-care assessment scale and were analyzed with inferential statistics, using mean comparison tests.
Results:
Self-care was best assessed in people with higher education level, higher household income and in a relationship.
Conclusion:
The socio-demographic characteristics influenced seven self-care practices: dietary control; monitoring of body weight; effort in labor activities; knowledge about HF; up-to-date vaccination record; leisure activities; and family and social support network with strong bonds. The higher prevalence of answers indicating satisfactory self-care practices among the patients occurred in the areas of health promotion and tolerance to stress.

Objective:
To compare the distributions of measurements of the Dutch Fatigue Scale (DUFS), Dutch Exertion Fatigue Scale (DEFS), and Fatigue Pictogram tools, according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
Method:
Methodological, cross-sectional study with 118 patients with heart failure. Variance analysis, Pearson's correlation, and Fisher's exact tests were carried out, with a significance level of 0.05.
Results:
There was an increase in the DUFS and DEFS means with worsening of the NYHA-FC (p<0.001, for both tools). Correlations among the LVEF resulted in positive and weak magnitude for the DEFS (r=0.18; p=0.05) and for the DUFS (r=0.16; p=0.08). Just the item A on the Fatigue Pictogram had an association with the NYHA-FC (p<0.001) and the LVEF (p=0.03).
Conclusion:
Three tools detected worsening in fatigue levels according to the illness severity assessed by the NYHA-FC.

Objective:
to develop and validate a nursing care protocol for patients with a ventricular assist device (VAD).
Method:
descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, for an instrument's methodological validation. Three stages were conducted: development of the instrument; protocol content validation according to the Delphi technique, and agreement among experts and the scientific literature.
Results:
based on the content validation, a care protocol for patients with a VAD was created and assessed by Spanish experts. Of the 15 items evaluated by means of the content validity index (CVI), 10 presented solid evidence of validation, with Kappa ranging between 0.87 and 1.
Conclusion:
the method enabled the validation of interventions that will contribute to qualified and standardized care for patients with a VAD.
