Spirituality in the uncertainty of illness: the perspective of oncology patients

Objective:
To analyze spirituality in the process of illness uncertainty in cancer patients.
Methods:
This is a qualitative study, in which Merle Mishel’s Theory of Uncertainty of Disease was used as a theoretical framework; and as a methodological reference, the stages of Bardin’s Content Analysis. As a technique for obtaining information, a semi-structured interview was used.
Results:
Spirituality in the uncertainty of the disease varies from patient to patient and acts in a unique way. They presented readaptation attitudes in their reports. The presence of spirituality in their lives acted as the main force mechanism to deal with the uncertainty of the disease, and this moment was called by Mishel “probabilistic thinking”.
Conclusion:
Patients demonstrated readaptation attitudes in their reports, and spirituality acted as the main mechanism of strength to deal with uncertainty in the disease

Objective:

Objective:
To understand the spiritual needs of the patients' family caregiver under Oncology palliative care.
Method:
A descriptive, qualitative study with 20 family caregivers of patients hospitalized in an Oncology palliative unit. The data were collected through a phenomenological interview, and analyzed by the method of Amadeo Giorgi supported in the Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception.
Results:
The categories were unveiled: "Spirituality as a foundation for life"; "Spiritual needs sublimated by the family caregiver"; and "Care expected by the nurse".
Conclusion:
Family caregivers appropriate spirituality as a coping strategy and meeting the purpose and meaning of the moment experienced. It is profitable for the nurse to contemplate the spiritual needs of the caregiver in order to provide a guided assistance in the humanization of care and comprehensive care. Therefore, there is a need for new studies that address this dimension to the family caregiver in the field of Oncology, since this care is incipient by the nurse.

Qualitative study guided by Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical framework and Grounded Theory as a methodological framework. Six rural families (18 participants) undergoing the experience of having a relative with cancer participated in the interview.
Results:
Constant comparative analysis of data allowed the elaboration of an explanatory substantive theory, defined by the main category Caregiving to support the family world, which represents the family's symbolic actions and strategies to reconcile care for the patient and care for family life.
Final considerations:
Throughout the experience, rural families seek to preserve the interconnected symbolic elements that provide support for the family world: family unit, land, work and care.

Objective:
to unveil the significances of women who experience being the caregiver of their companion with cancer.
Method:
a Heidegger's phenomenological research, performed with ten women who are caregivers of their companions with cancer in a town in the northwest of the state of Paraná, Brazil, from December 2013 to February 2014. The following guiding question was used: "How has it been for you to care for your companion with cancer?".
Results:
from the analysis of the speeches the following ontological themes emerged: "Taking responsibility of caring for the companion with cancer", "Learning to live with the intimacy changes" and "Learning to live with the feelings related to care". The data revealed the wives' sense of responsibilities for caring and the influence of feelings in the act of caring, including the impact on the couple's intimacy.
Conclusion:
in the midst of difficulties, the feelings of affection are the driving force behind these women to continue their actions as wife-caregivers.
