Objective:
To reflect on the role of Brazilian nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic, considering as a historical landmark the bicentenary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, a precursor of modern nursing, celebrated in 2020.
Method:
Theoretical-reflective study, based on Florence Nightingale’s environmental theory through a literature review, carried out in international and national virtual news from different sources and added to the authors’ experiences related to the pandemic.
Results:
It was possible to identify the weaknesses experienced by nurse practitioners as to contagion by COVID-19, the routine of exposure to risks, the lack of adequate protection in many scenarios, the high rates of illness, and also deaths that occurred in this profession.
Final considerations:
Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory describes the importance of the adequacy of the work environment. It also emphasizes the value of this professional for contemporary nursing and the redefinition of this professional category during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective:
to assess the quality of life of nurse practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic and analyze related factors.
Methods:
cross-sectional and analytical study carried out with nurse practitioners. A questionnaire on sociodemographic characterization, work activities and changes perceived with the pandemic and WHOQOL-bref were used. To compare the groups of interest, analysis of covariance was used.
Results:
572 professionals participated, who had a mean total quality of life score of 56.79 (SD=13.56). In the relationship of variables with WHOQOL-bref, having two or more jobs and being a nurse were associated with better quality of life, but being a woman and working more than 50 hours a week was associated with a worse perception of the construct.
Conclusions:
the factors analyzed indicate a lower perception of quality of life associated with the social domain, requiring interventions that reduce the damage to professionals’ health and contribute to quality of care provided.

Results:
they were organized into two thematic categories: “Angels and heroes? The (not) heroic reality of nursing during the pandemic” and “The search for recognition of the professional work of nursing: between what is said and what is not said”.
Final considerations:
the nurses’ speeches enunciate the search for decent conditions for the execution of care, fair wages, and recognition of the professional work by society.

Objectives:
to describe a product technology building (Care Facilitator Cart) with nursing professionals working in surgical clinic and medical clinic at a university hospital in Rio Grande do Sul.
Methods:
a qualitative, methodological research guided by the Business Model Canvas, with 52 nursing professionals, through non-participant observation and brainstorming, carried out from April to October 2016. The records were analyzed through content analysis.
Results:
the product was built with two floors, a retractable table, a removable compartment for disposal and separation of infectious, recyclable and sharps waste, lid opening by a sensor, among others.
Final Considerations:
the invention unleashes possibilities to be an innovative instrument aimed at performing safe care in hospital institutions, with a view to reducing professional wear, rework, infection control, and effectiveness of procedures and techniques.

Objective:
to analyze the knowledge and practices of nursing professionals in caring for people with colostomy bag.
Method:
a qualitative and descriptive study conducted with 21 nursing professionals from a General Surgery Unit. Data collection used triangulation of techniques, based on non-participant observation, analysis of nursing records, and semi-structured interviews. Analysis followed the spiral technique assumptions.
Results:
it was possible to comprehend the theoretical and scientific knowledge that subsidize practice; identify contradictions related to statement and care in the profession’s daily work and the intervening factors, which can facilitate and/or make the nursing care process difficult.
Final Considerations:
knowledge and practices of professionals in caring for ostomates occur within work experiences, in which socialization of knowledge makes it possible to expand the perspectives of care.

Objectives:
to analyze the perception of nursing professionals about patient safety culture in three highly complex hospital institutions.
Methods:
descriptive and quantitative study with professionals working in care. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire was applied, classifying its dimensions according to the percentage of positive responses (strengthened: ≥75.0%; potential for improvement: <75.0% to> 50.0%; weakened: ≤50.0%).
Results:
four hundred sixty-seven professionals (79.6%), mostly women (88.4%), nursing technicians/assistants (57.2%), 20 to 39 years (60.8%), less than five years in the institution (57.8%) and exclusive bond (79.2%) participated in the study. Safety culture was considered fragile, seven dimensions assessed as such, highlighting “Openness to communication” and “Non-punitive responses to errors” with <30.0% positive responses.
Conclusions:
evidence of the need for discussion of the subject and strategies for change that promote quality and safety of care.

Objective:
to understand the meaning of the care of hospitalized children for the nursing professionals of a pediatric unit.
Method:
phenomenological study, based on the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger. Ten nursing professionals were interviewed with the guiding question: “What is the care of hospitalized children for you? Tell me, in detail, your experience with taking care of hospitalized children.”
Results:
the meaning of the care of hospitalized children materializes between the profession and the various ways of preoccupation. By engaging in/worrying about the ways of being of everyday life, the professionals tend to improperness when trying to mediate and level all possibilities of being. However, when they extrapolate reassurance and do not get caught up in themselves, they achieve empathy, respect, and indulgence.
Final Considerations:
it is necessary to reassess the teaching and practice of care, so that authentic care is offered to children and their families in the context of hospitalization.
