Objective:
to reflect on the connection between self-image, self-esteem, active sexuality, and quality of life in ageing; identify which measurement instruments in Brazilian and international literature interconnectively address the connections referred to in the general objective.
Method:
a theoretical-reflexive essay.
Results:
the reflection was described in the guiding axes: Connections between self-image, self-esteem, active sexuality, and quality of life in ageing; Interlocutions and instruments for measuring the connection between sexuality and ageing. Instruments in Brazilian and international literature are unable to address this topic in an interconnected way. Limitations and disadvantages of application with elderly individuals are presented.
Final considerations:
carrying out qualitative research and validating quantitative instruments that show connections and interlocutions, without stigmas and reprimands, common in this age group, should be encouraged in the scientific field and in social spaces.

Objective:
to assess the quality of life and body image of men with difficulty urinating and indwelling urinary catheter users, integrating the socio-demographic, economic and morbidity variables.
Method:
a cross-sectional analytical study with 64 male patients with urinary problems. Three questionnaires were used for data collection: one containing sociodemographic, economic and morbid data, the Medical Outcome Study 36-item short-form health survey to analyze quality of life, and the Body Dysmorphic Examination, which assesses body image. T-test, Mann-Whitney, Pearson, Spearman, Linear Regression and Stepwise were used.
Results:
quality of life and body image were compromised in both groups, affecting emotional aspects, with a high degree of body dissatisfaction and altered physical and social adversity.
Conclusion:
changes in patients’ quality of life and body image were observed, confirming the need for improvement in care.

Objective:
to develop a literature review about low self-esteem and components of the nursing diagnoses Low Chronic Self-Esteem and Low Situational Self-Esteem in patients with depressed mood.
Method:
an integrative literature review carried out in the Pubmed portal and in the Scopus and Web of Science electronic bibliographic databases. Depression and self-esteem descriptors were used, resulting in 32 articles.
Results:
literature indicated 7 clinical indicators and 14 etiological factors for low self-esteem.
Conclusion:
The clinical indicators Suicidal ideation and Ineffective treatment were more prevalent in the study. The etiological factors Stressful events and Stigmatization were the most frequent, both of which were suggested as new related factors for low self-esteem. Nursing diagnosis recognition can contribute to intervention strategy elaboration by the nurse, according to the urgent diagnostic and the individual’s particularities.

Method:
a cross-sectional study of 47 outpatients from October 2016 to February 2017. The following tools were applied: The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, Beck Depression Inventory and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation were used.
Results:
women had lower scores for health-related quality of life. Young adults, people with up to one and a half years of transplantation and those who had dialysis for more than one year had higher scores.
Conclusion:
the health-related quality of life of people with chronic kidney disease after transplantation ranged from good to excellent. The presence of depression was not identified. The relationship of data indicates that the higher the quality of life, the better the self-esteem assessment.

Objective:
To analyze conditions of depression, self-concept, future expectations and hope in people with HIV/AIDS.
Method:
Cross-sectional survey of 108 individuals living with HIV/AIDS, carried out in a reference hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases in Northeast Brazil. The following instruments were employed: sociodemographic data, and questionnaires for ascertaining participants’ emotions, including scales for self-concept, hope, depression (HAMD-D), and future expectations. Descriptive statistics using the following tests were performed: Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis, chi-square, and t-test—considered significant when p ≤ 0.05.
Results:
31.5% presented mild depression and 21.3% presented moderate depression; 63% reported difficulty in obtaining decent employment; 52.8% considered life a failure; 52.8% felt worthless. Fear, guilt and loneliness influenced self-concept (p ≤ 0.05). Loneliness influenced hope (p ≤ 0.05).
Conclusion:
It is necessary to raise the attention of nursing professionals and healthcare managers to the importance of providing health services that consider the mental health of people with HIV/AIDS, contributing to treatment adherence and well-being.

Objective:
to assess self-esteem (SE) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in ostomized patients due to colorectal cancer.
Method:
cross sectional research with a quantitative approach. Three instruments were used for data collection: one instrument containing sociodemographic and clinical data, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire.
Results:
SE and HRQoL were considered satisfactory. Significant statistical difference was found in the social function domain and marital status, ostomy duration, location, and time; global health scale and ostomy type; cognitive function and pain in the ostomy site. There was a correlation between self-esteem and all the functional scales and the global health scale.
Conclusion:
knowing SE and HRQoL levels, in addition to the variables that influence them, supports ostomized patients' care planning, rehabilitation, and social autonomy.
