    Objective:

to identify the scientific publications about adverse events in nursing care in adult hospitalized patients and discuss the main adverse events in nursing care.

    Method:

Integrative revision with a qualitative approach. The data were collected at LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENF and the library SCIELO and were submitted to thematic analysis.

    Results:

three categories were developed: Adverse events in nursing care; The main causes of the adverse events in nursing care; Attitude of nursing professionals in face of errors. The main events were identified in nursing care with emphasis on the medication error, the failure to perform dressings and falls of patients. The importance of instruments was emphasized for notification of adverse events in the institutions. However the fear of punishment on professionals stimulates the underreporting of events.

    Conclusion:

it is important to discuss effective prevention strategies that ensure patient safety in healthcare institutions.

    Objective:

to describe the main non-pharmacological interventions for pain relief in newborns available in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

    Method:

an exploratory search of the MedLine, Lilacs and Scielo online databases was conducted to retrieve references of studies published from 2004 to 2013.

    Results:

several non-pharmacological interventions were shown to be effective, to represent low risk for neonates and to have a low operational cost. The ones most often discussed in the literature were: oral administration of glucose/sucrose, non-nutritive sucking, breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, facilitated tucking and swaddling.

    Conclusion:

healthcare teams should be familiar with these methods and use them more effectively in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit daily routines, so as to ensure that newborns receive qualified and more human care.

    ABSTRACT

    Objectives:

to report a clinical case of needle phobia which culminated in cardiac arrest and describe the outcome of a care plan based on fear and anxiety diagnoses, using the Roy adaptation model as the framework.

    Methods:

case study conducted in a chemotherapy outpatient unit in Rio de Janeiro. Care was guided by the nursing process and the use of instruments to assess the venous network, anxiety and fear.

    Results:

the Roy adaptation model enabled proposing nursing interventions that allowed the study subject to adapt to the external and internal stimuli triggered by vasovagal syndrome. The instruments indicated the choice of an adequate semi-implanted venous access device and led to improved levels of anxiety and fear.

    Final Considerations:

after carrying out the nursing activities, anxiety was reduced, and the patient achieved greater control over fear.

    ABSTRACT

    Objectives:

to analyze the nutritional status of women with diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy and the newborns’ characteristics in relation to health conditions at birth.

    Methods:

transversal study with data from 394 electronic medical charts (197 newborn and 197 mothers), between 2017 and 2018. Descriptive and analytical statistics.

    Results:

there was prevalence of women with Gestational Diabetes (78.2%), followed by Type II Diabetes (13.7%) and Type I Diabetes (8.1%), and of term births (85.3%) and cesarean deliveries (54.8%). Type I Diabetes was associated to earlier gestational age at birth (p>0.001) and obesity during pregnancy was associated to higher birth weight of newborns (p=0.024). Clinical complications occurred in 37.6% of newborns. Among complications, Type I Diabetes was associated with respiratory disorder (p=0.005), and prematurity was associated with mother’s overweight/obesity (p=0.010).

    Conclusions:

we strongly advise about the need of metabolic and nutritional control during gestations that course with Diabetes mellitus, due occurrence of negative consequences to the newborn´s health at birth.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the Preterm Parenting & Self-Efficacy Checklist to the Brazilian Portuguese.

    Method:

A methodological study was carried out with 51 parents of premature infants. Data analysis was based on psychometric and inferential statistical analyses.

    Results:

The instrument content validation by experts obtained excellent agreement (97%) and the semantic analysis by the target population showed good understanding of the terms and ease of use. In test-retest, most participants were female (64.7%); and parents with higher education (47.1%). The instrument showed stability over time, with good internal consistency (α = 0.84). Four factors were generated in the subscales parenting self-efficacy, importance of tasks and self-perceived parental competence (67.0% to 74.2% of the variance).

    Conclusion:

The properties of the Preterm Parenting & Self-Efficacy Checklist – Brazilian Version were maintained, which is a reliable indicator to evaluate the hospital discharge of premature infants.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To report the educational experience with pregnant women considering the recovery of collective memory inherited from the care for the umbilical cord stump provided by grandmothers.

    Method:

This case study was based on collective memory and resulted from a workshop with 20 pregnant women from a Basic Health Unit in a city in the inland of Bahia.

    Results:

The study showed that pregnant women’s grandmothers are significant in the stump care process because they transmit their memories pervaded by beliefs, myths and superstitions that, although should be respected by nurses and other health professionals, can sometimes contribute to the occurrence of omphalitis and neonatal tetanus.

    Final considerations:

The results indicated the need for raising awareness and education of all persons involved in this care, especially grandmothers, so that they can reflect on the risks and damage that certain empirical knowledge can cause to the health of the umbilical cord.

    ABSTRACT

    Objectives:

to analyze predictive factors for the incidence of complications related to peripheral venous catheters in children and adolescents with cancer.

    Methods:

a longitudinal follow-up study, conducted at a pediatric oncology clinic unit of a hospital in Bahia, with 333 peripheral venous catheters inserted in 77 children and 26 adolescents. Data collection took place between April 2015 and December 2016 through direct observation of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion, medical record data collection and daily observation of the puncture site.

    Results:

the incidence of complications was 18.6%. The modeling of the variables confirmed that the risk factors for complications in children/adolescents with cancer were: prolonged peripheral intravenous therapy (p=0.002), history of complications (p=0.000), non-irritating/vesicant medications (p=0.003) and vesicant solutions (p=0.000).

    Conclusions:

the goal has been achieved. Results can contribute to the theoretical, practical and social context.

    ABSTRACT

    Objective:

To know the perception, meanings and repercussions of specific precautions for hospitalized patients.

    Methods:

Qualitative study with qualitative clinical methodology according to the vulnerability theoretical reference. The semi-directed interview and the Bardin content analysis were used.

    Results:

Identification of three thematic units: (1) guidelines received, in which there was lack of information and misunderstandings about the reason for precautionary implementation; (2) perceptions about private rooms, there with both positive and negative perceptions; and (3) stigma related to the isolation condition, given patients felt constraint for being in a unit of infectious diseases and fear of being separated from the others.

    Final considerations:

Situations of vulnerability were evidenced, both related to hospitalization and feelings aroused. The study can contribute to health services by broadening their vision beyond infection control.
