Objective:
to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with frailty in non-institutionalized older adults living in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Method:
data were collected in their homes, in 2013, based on a census cluster sampling. Demographic and socioeconomic variables, morbidities, utilization of health care services, and scores on the Edmonton Fragility Scale were analyzed. The adjusted prevalence ratios were obtained using the Poisson regression multiple analysis with robust variance.
Results:
the prevalence of frailty was 41.3%. The variables associated with frailty were: female gender, very old age, education of less than four years, not having been hospitalized in the last 12 months, having a caregiver, falling in the prior year, diabetes mellitus, cardiac disease, and osteoarticular disease.
Conclusion:
the prevalence of frailty was high. Some factors consist of modifiable conditions, which should encourage health actions aimed at this group.

Objective:
to analyze the factors that influenced the choice for nursing made by graduates from the first class of the Undergraduate Nursing and Obstetrics Course of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in the 1970s and to understand the senses and meanings of being a nurse when choosing this profession.
Method:
a qualitative socio-historical study was performed, using oral history to collect data.
Results:
the analysis generated the following categories: “To be a nurse: a professional choice” and “The ideal of being a nurse: senses and meanings”. The senses of “being a nurse” are associated with graduates’ perspective of this profession and the meanings included the traditional conceptions that have historically affected it.
Conclusion:
professional choice was influenced by family and work expectations and the nursing course had an effect on the construction of nurses’ professional identity.

Objective:
to identify nurses’ knowledge and practice in the framework of the Family Health Strategy program with regard to social participation in health.
Method:
qualitative study which had the Family Health Units in a municipality of Minas Gerais as setting. Nine nurses participated in the study, and they were interviewed individually in July and August 2014. Data were collected and analyzed according to the content analysis technique and interpreted in the light of Paulo Freire’s ontology and critical pedagogy.
Results:
the analyzed statements showed that nurses bring along conceptual and behavioral inconsistencies which need to be equalized, so their knowledge and practice can mediate the challenging construction of participatory management in health.
Conclusion:
an improvement in nurses’ training is suggested, both academically and professionally, aiming at strengthening their political role in the process of consolidation of social participation in the Brazilian Unified Health System.

Objective:
to characterize the patients’ anxiety in the preoperative period of heart surgery.
Method:
We conducted a cross-sectional study in which 106 patients, between one and five days from the date of surgery, were interviewed using a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Beck Anxiety Inventory.
Results:
The evaluated patients accounted for 59.4% (63) in minimal anxiety and 19.8% (21) in the range considered severe, and the sample had a mean in the mild anxiety level (15.8±19.79). The women had scores (22.13±23.41) significantly (p=0.003) higher than men (10.76±14.71); as well as patients who had undergone previous heart surgery (24.4±28.05 X 13.14±15.74). There was no significant difference between older adults and younger patients, nor in terms of weight variations, presence of diabetes, or alcoholism.
Conclusion:
We reinforces the importance of nurses in recognizing the preoperative anxiety and intervene through strategies of health education and nursing visits.

Objective:
Understand the beliefs, knowledge, and actions of nursing technicians on breastfeeding as a form of non-pharmacological intervention to relieve pain in newborns and infants during immunization.
Methods:
Qualitative study carried out through semi-structured interviews with nine nursing technicians from three Basic Health Units in a city in the state of São Paulo. The theoretical approach of the Belief Model and the methodological framework of Thematic Analysis supported this study.
Results:
Three themes originated: Beliefs, Knowledge, and Actions of nursing technicians.
Final considerations:
Despite knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding as the most effective method for relieving pain in newborns and infants during vaccination, their restrictive beliefs overrode the evidence, leading them to act in ways that discourage or prevent the mother from breastfeed during vaccination. Formal training is recommended to align with current evidence-based practices.

Methods:
a qualitative study based on Social Representation Theory was conducted with 126 participants between October 2021 and May 2022 in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro. A characterization questionnaire, free evocations of the inducing term “surgery”, and semi-structured interviews with 60 participants were applied. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel® and IRaMuTeQ.
Results:
the central core of the representation is composed of fear, cure, hope, and removing the disease. The analysis of interviews resulted in six classes that highlight the social changes caused by treatment as well as the need for a support network to cope with the surgical process.
Final Considerations:
the representations reflect fear and hope towards the procedure and the desire to remove the disease, thus translating the cure through surgery.

Objectives:
to analyze the association of socioeconomic level and obstetric characteristics with vaccine registration of pregnant women.
Methods:
cross-sectional study, performed with 480 women in puerperal. Vaccination of pregnant women was considered a dependent variable and as independent variables were age, skin color, education, steady union, paid work, and number of prenatal consultations. Association between variables was verified by the Poisson’s regression model.
Results:
from 480 pregnant women’s health cards, 10.63% had information on hepatitis B vaccination; 31.46% for tetanus; and 90% of the health cards had not register for influenza. There was an association of paid work and number of prenatal consultations with hepatitis B vaccination.
Conclusions:
lower percentages in absence of vaccination occurred in women who were in the job market and had a higher number of prenatal consultations. This suggests that socioeconomic inequalities may interfere with the vaccination of pregnant women in health services.

Objective:
To describe nurses’ experience in the care of high-risk newborns.
Method:
This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and performed at the Fernando Magalhães Maternity Hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro, through interviews with 30 nurses who work in neonatal care, according to the phenomenological thinking of Maurice Merleau- Ponty.
Results:
Three categories emerged: “experienced body of the nurse practitioner on the high-risk newborn”; “experienced world of the nurse practitioner on the high-risk newborn”; and “time spent by the nurse practitioner with the high-risk newborn”.
Final considerations:
The study allowed us to describe, through the participants’ speeches, that the care of the high-risk newborn is broad, that is, objective, subjective and carried out with advanced technologies, their experiences and scientific improvement are composed of shared practice and theory with the family, professionals and beginners in the neonatal universe, favoring a differentiated and humanized care.

Methods:
cross-sectional, retrospective study, based on secondary data obtained from ethical-disciplinary lawsuits filed at the Regional Nursing Council of Goiás (Coren-Goiás) between the years 2010 and 2019.
Results:
the highest number of lawsuits filed was in 2013 and 2014, with a greater frequency in the state capital. The majority came from the Nursing Ethics Committees and ex-officio complaints. The professional with most complaints was the nursing technician, aged between 31 and 40 years old, at the beginning of their career. The most common type of complaints referred to performing attributions that were not within the nursing competences.
Conclusions:
as a highlight are the contributions of this study to professional ethics in nursing and the clear need to consolidate these skills in nurses who are in training and in the continuous education for those already in the profession.
