Health needs and nursing care

Objective:
to present the concept of needs according to different approaches to discuss the possibility of health care that incorporates a broader view of human vulnerabilities in health services.
Methods:
the arguments are founded on nursing theorists who worked on the construction of frameworks relevant to care, based on needs and on philosophers who show the possibility of identifying the vulnerabilities of human beings, defending art as a therapeutic instrument that can promote health care.
Conclusion:
although care can acquire a new dimension with the introduction of art, according to certain perspectives, philosophical studies on ethics and aesthetics should be resumed to identify human vulnerabilities that can in fact be compensated by sensible understanding of the outer world. To incorporate art in nursing care requires studies from theorists to be recovered, deepening concepts and working on empirical investigations for their adequate use.

Objectives:
analyze gender inequalities among Brazilian women in Portugal and in contemporary nursing based on care politicity in the light of gender; disclose oppression of the female produced by the stereotypes that look upon women as natural caregivers; point out politicity to deconstruct gender stereotypes.
Method:
theoretical reflection with narrative review of literature to analyze classic references in the feminist epistemology combined with the care politicity thesis.
Results:
the similarities between the stereotypes of the Brazilian Eves and the Portuguese Maries as either the sexualized or sanctified nurse are inserted in the Jewish-Christian moral genealogy that reaffirms the subservience of the female to the male.
Conclusion:
by attaching priority to care that needs non-care to expand the possibilities of care giving, the theoretical assumption of politicy of care can contribute to subvert the stereotypical images of Brazilian women in Portuguese lands and in contemporary nursing.

The findings suggest solidified power relations among female nurses and women, focused on professional domain concentrated on nurse education under the patriarchal and society’s normalization discourse. Some studies consider the importance of understanding power in a capillary way, operating on the bodies of individuals.
Conclusion:
there is little discussion about the care of self of nurses and the effects on their professional practice, indicating gaps in knowledge in this field.

Objective:
to understand the perception of nursing staff professionals and legal guardians of children and adolescents with cancer regarding Assisted Therapy with dogs.
Method:
qualitative study based on participant observation conducted with 16 participants in a reference hospital of child cancer. We applied an in-depth interview and interpreted the data according to a content analysis technique.
Results:
the practice is admittedly beneficial to participants despite the fact they do not understand its true objectives and therapeutic applications. Participants only associate it with something distracting and entertaining without realizing the occurrence of a more complex process behind it, which comprises changes besides the emotional ones (more easily perceived).
Conclusion:
the perceptions of participants reinforce recommendations that can be applied in the hospital environment, also showing that the therapy in question can become an effective technology to promote the health of children and adolescents with cancer.

Method:
this is a quantitative, cross-sectional, observational and exploratory study with 331 inhabitants of two cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data analysis was conducted by Poisson regression.
Results:
reported health disorders included: mental (62.2%); circulatory (49.8%); dermatologic (45%); respiratory (41%); and gastric (36.2%). Workers who apply pesticides showed a 90% higher prevalence of dermatological alterations when compared to those who did not.
Conclusion:
the socio-environmental approach, comprising elements of the rural environment, of workers, and of the use of pesticides in the work process in connection/association with potential health disorders has shown that rural workers who apply pesticides present a higher prevalence of dermatological alterations.

Objective:
to analyze the decision-making model adopted by nurses from the perspective of some decision-making process theories.
Method:
qualitative approach, based on action research. Semi-structured questionnaires and seminars were conducted from April to June 2012 in order to understand the nature of decisions and the decision-making process of nine nurses in position of managers at a public hospital in Southern Brazil. Data were subjected to content analysis.
Results:
data were classified in two categories: the current situation of decision-making, which showed a lack of systematization; the construction and collective decision-making, which emphasizes the need to develop a decision-making model.
Conclusion:
the decision-making model used by nurses is limited because it does not consider two important factors: the limits of human rationality, and the external and internal organizational environments that infl uence and determine right decisions.

Method:
cross-sectional study with elderly patients of both genders. The variables associated with functional disability were assessed using Poisson regression.
Results:

The highest prevalence of functional disability were found among females aged 80 or older, white, widowed, of economic classes D/E , who lived alone, with frequency of contacts of up to 224 people and diversity of contacts of up to 14 people. After multivariate analysis, statistically significant association was observed between functional disability, gender and age group.
Conclusion:

Objective:
to develop and validate a short guide for the protocol to user embracement with risk classification in pediatrics.
Method:
methodological study developed in two stages: development of the guide, and face and content validation. The development involved the stratification of the protocol contents into five risk indicators according to the level of complexity; subsequently it was submitted to validation by nine experts divided in two groups: professors who were also researchers, and nurses.
Results:
in the face validation the experts considered the 25 items of the guide clear and understandable, with agreement levels above 70%. In the content validation, 17 (68%) items were considered relevant by 88.9% of the experts. The eight items considered irrelevant were changed according to suggestions of the experts, yielding an overall content validity index of 0.98.
Conclusion:
the study resulted in a guide for the classification of risks in pediatrics that is valid to assess children in emergency services.

Objective:
to identify key components of the social learning theory in a computational tool to aid in teaching the reasoning process for the preparation of a nursing diagnosis.
Method:
qualitative study that analyzed the statements collected through a focus group of 18 teachers and students from two Brazilian nursing schools.
Results:
the themes were grouped into four categories related to the components of the theory and into 13 subcategories.
Conclusion:
the meaning of learning can be extended by the teacher’s didactics and corroborated by the relationship between systematization and reasoning. To learn by doing, some prerequisites are required as is a process of motivation and qualification, which are also inherent to learning by forming an identity in the group. In the feeling of belonging to a particular group, aspects related to the profession become visible as opposed to the aspects of belonging to a community of practice of learning.

Objective:
verify if the mode of care adopted by caregivers favored functional independence recovery by elderly with and without the presence of nervous system disease and mental and behavioral disorders; and, if disease interfered with their functional independence.
Method:
transversal study, with 12-month follow-up of 89 Brazilian elders (≥ 60 years) after proximal femoral surgery, and their family caregiver.
Results:
the Functional Independence Measure scores decreased by 0.7 points per year of life, and in the case of presenting nervous system disease and mental and behavioral disorders, this loss amounted to 20.5 points.
Conclusion:
The incentive to ambulate increased by 18.8 for self-care, 12.8 for self-care, and 11.5 for leisure activities on the Functional Independence Measure. Encouraging movement and ambulation, self-care and leisure activities, especially with those elderly with nervous system diseases and mental and behavioral disorders, is recommended.
