Objectives:
to understand the perceptions of women and health professionals regarding childbirth care at a teaching hospital in the western state of Paraná, Brazil.
Methods:
this qualitative study employed Grounded Theory, conducted in an obstetric care service with 38 participants (women and health professionals) through semi-structured interviews.
Results:
limitations in physical infrastructure and management of care, along with the women’s limited knowledge about the childbirth process and the decision-making and guidance of professionals, show conflicting obstetric practices-a discrepancy between good practices and obstetric violence. Training in obstetric nursing and active participation in care, alongside the presence of a companion, were identified as intervening conditions and strategies in the process.
Final Considerations:
childbirth care is characterized by dichotomous practices. While some professionals base their practices on scientific evidence, others rely on teachings and experiences from the time of their training.

Objectives:
to analyze the relationship between the nursing practice environment and hospital sociotechnical complexity as perceived by nurses.
Methods:
a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was conducted in a hospital in southern Brazil. The Brazilian version of the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index and the Complexity Characterization Questionnaire were administered to 132 nurses. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants, and the data were subjected to thematic analysis. Data integration was achieved through a connection approach.
Results:
the nursing practice environment was found to be favorable, except in the subscale concerning Staffing and Resource Adequacy, where complexity was present in the activities. The three emerging categories explained human and technical aspects related to complexity in the practice environment, quality of care, and patient safety. Unexpected variability was inversely correlated with the practice environment.
Conclusions:
the study results indicate a relationship between these constructs, with implications for the quality and the safety of care.

Objectives:
to analyze the factors associated with maternal well-being during childbirth among postpartum women in Minas Gerais.
Methods:
a cross-sectional study nested within a cohort was conducted with postpartum women in a municipality of Minas Gerais. The Maternal Well-being in Childbirth Scale 2 was used. The prevalence of maternal well-being during childbirth was estimated. The magnitude of the association between maternal distress and care practices was estimated using the Prevalence Ratio (PR), applying Poisson regression.
Results:
a total of 183 postpartum women aged between 15 and 46 years participated, with 26.2%, 27.9%, and 45.9% reporting excellent, adequate, and poor well-being during childbirth care, respectively. Maternal distress was more prevalent among women who underwent cesarean sections (PR = 1.60) and those who did not receive breastfeeding information (PR = 1.59).
Conclusions:
a high prevalence of maternal distress during childbirth was observed, associated with cesarean delivery and the lack of breastfeeding information.

Objective:
to evidence the use of flushing to prevent complications from intravenous therapy.
Methods:
an integrative review in databases, using descriptors and selection criteria. Data were collected in 12 articles using an instrument and later classified, summarized and aggregated for knowledge synthesis.
Results:
it was evident that: the pre-filled syringe resulted in a lower occurrence of catheter obstruction; irregular flushing frequency caused advanced phlebitis; the use of Venous Arterial Blood Management Protection (VAMP) generated a lower incidence of blood infection; heparinized solution did not result in a lower central catheter failure rate; flushing volume and frequency were not predictors of catheter failure; flushing practice was not shown to be incorporated among professionals.
Conclusion:
there are disagreements about the volume, frequency, solution and devices used in flushing. New technologies can reduce complications such as obstruction and infection.

Objectives:
to identify in the literature, the predictors of ECMO complications in adult patients.
Methods:
integrative review of literature, including articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish published from 2014 to 2018 in five databases. Included articles which analyzed the predictive factors of ECMO complications in adult patients using multivariate analysis.
Results:
a total of 1629 articles were identified, of which 19 were included. Nineteen predictors were identified for neurological complications (e.g., post-ECMO hypoglycemia), seven for bleeding complications (e.g., fungal pneumonia), four for infections complications (e.g., preoperative creatinine level), three for kidney complications (e.g., the length of ICU stay> 20 days) and a combination of factors for mechanical complications (e.g., median flow).
Conclusions:
different predictors were identified to ECMO complications. The knowledge of these predictors enables the individualized targeting of preventive interventions by multidisciplinary team for modifiable factors, as well as intensification of monitoring for early recognition of non-modifiable factors.

Objectives:
to analyze the opinions of healthcare students on organ and tissue donation for transplantation.
Methods:
qualitative document analysis study, using the records of a database and analyzing data from two perspectives: 1) Lexical analysis, with the IRAMUTEQ software, and 2) Thematic content analysis.
Results:
from the analysis, 3 main categories were generated: 1) Organ and tissue donation as an act of love for others and an opportunity of a new beginning; 2) Clarification and awareness on organ and tissue donation; and 3) Importance of communicating the family and promoting organ and tissue donation.
Final Considerations:
despite being in favor of donation, students also recognize the presence of social taboos; the discussion in the family nucleus, promoting the theme and raising awareness in society are considered important. Additionally, the education of students is one of the possibilities of intervention for the issue.
