Obesity is defined as the excessive accumulation of body fat that affects health and well-being. Morbidity is an established risk factor for the onset of cardiovascular disease. hypercholesterolemia. diabetes mellitus. insulin resistance and hypertension. The strong association between weight gain and change in blood pressure values is identified in both genders and in different population groups. In Brazil. in 2017. the rate was 18.9% for obesity and 24.3% for hypertension. with higher prevalence in people with little education(–).
Excessive fat is associated with the chance of having hypertension due to the relationship with different mechanisms that raise blood pressure levels. Some examples are altered hemodynamics. impaired sodium homeostasis. renal dysfunction. autonomic nervous system imbalance. endocrine changes. oxidative stress. inflammation and vascular injury. which lead to complications due to the chronicity of the pathology(–).
